The Grammys do it again

The Grammys have done it again. Grammy nominations were released this past week and many involved in the music industry, artists & Fans alike, were not happy. This year’s nominations were full of surprises mostly snubs of some of the most popular music from this past year. Another set of poor nominations by the grammy selection committee has people once again calling for a reformation of the nomination process.

The biggest snub of all was The Weeknd. He received zero nominations despite releasing the extremely successful album After Hours earlier this year. The album sold a whopping 444, 000 units in its first week and was number on the billboard charts for a month straight. The album’s most popular song, Blinding Lights, broke the all-time record for most weeks at number one, with the song spending 19 weeks atop the charts. Lil Baby’s album my turn and Lil Uzi Vert’s Eternal Atake were snubbed as well, as both failed to receive a Rap album of the Year nomination. My turn topped the billboard charts for 5 weeks while Eternal Atake reigned for two weeks. Both albums have already gone platinum.

Snubs are nothing new to the Grammys. In 2018, the smash hit Despacito was snubbed in favor of Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic. In 2011, Drake and Justin Bieber both lost the Best New Artist award to Esperanza Spalding. In 2014, Kendrick Lamar lost the Best New Artist award to Macklemore. These are just a few, out of many, instances where the Grammys have made mind-boggling decisions.

While snubs aren’t new, many are beginning to question the magnitude of the Grammys. The Grammys in total, are on the hot seat. Artists are seriously considering starting a new platform for recognition, that is more catered towards music today. The Grammys began in the 1950s and have stood the test of time; however, they may finally get left behind if they can’t get their act together.
